The Solheimasandur wreck is reached from a small roadside lot on the Ring Road followed by a flat, exposed walk of about 4.5 miles round-trip, so plan on roughly an hour each way depending on wind and pace. There are no facilities or shelter, the black sand blows grit into everything, and conditions can change fast, so wear windproof layers, bring water, and a charged phone, and allow extra time so you are not rushed. Driving onto the beach is prohibited, stick to the marked route to protect the fragile landscape, and do not climb into unstable parts of the fuselage for safety. Before you get to the Solheimasandur plane wreck, you'll actually find another plane which is a fun surprise! Also keep an eye out for Arctic foxes, it's very rare to see them, but we ended up seeing 3 on this hike!

We really enjoyed this spot, but in all honestly it is not a "must-visit" unless you have a big interest in history, planes, or are just going for the pictures. But if you have time to spare, then why not?!

Here is the hike route :)

Also, if you still want to see Solheimasandur Plane Wreck, but don't want to hike, there is a shuttle that will take you. It's available every day of the week from 10 am-5 pm (prices change depending on the time of year).
