Hvítserkur is a striking 49ft tall basalt sea stack sitting just off the shore of the Vatnsnes Peninsula in northwest Iceland.

It’s an easy stop off the Ring Road with a parking area and short walk to viewpoints where you can see the formation from above or head down toward the beach at low tide.

What makes Hvítserkur so unique is how it comes up from the bay with two holes at its base that can look like a drinking animal, rhino, or even a troll frozen in place (there’s an old Icelandic legend about a troll turned to stone here).

If you enjoy wildlife, the Vatnsnes area around Hvítserkur is also one of Iceland’s best places to spot seals on nearby beaches, especially in summer!

There’s no entrance fee, and the short stroll from the parking is doable for most people, just come with sturdy shoes because paths can be a bit gravelly or slippery near the shore.

Hike route is linked below :)
