Hoheikyo Onsen is a mountain hot spring by Hoheikyo Dam about an hour from central Sapporo by car, known for large open-air baths with river and forest views. Expect crowds on weekends, so go early or late if you want quieter soaking; wash thoroughly and bathe nude in the gender-separated pools, and note tattoos are often not allowed though private family baths can be rented for privacy. There is parking, an on-site restaurant, lockers and towel rental, but bring some cash because card acceptance can be limited, and allow extra travel time in winter when roads can be icy.
