The hike to Håen on Værøy offers one of the most iconic views in the Lofoten Islands, showcasing the dramatic cliffs of Måstadfjell, the turquoise waters below, and the pristine Puinn beach. This relatively easy to moderate hike can follow the old NATO road for a straightforward route or branch into trails for a more adventurous trek. Either way, the views from the summit, including remnants of Viking history and birdlife like sea eagles, make this journey unforgettable.

Starting point: The starting point for the hike is a parking lot located between two distinctive blue houses (coordinates for Google Maps: 67.672931, 12.655669). To reach it, follow the road from the ferry terminal through Sørland and into the valley. The parking area is well-marked and provides a convenient spot to begin your ascent. Signposts near the parking lot clearly indicate the trailhead, ensuring an easy start to your journey.

Route: From the parking area, follow the marked trail as it ascends along a hillside. After an initial climb, the trail connects to the winding NATO road, an old military access route. You can choose to follow the road for a more relaxed hike or stay on trails that traverse the ridges for a more dynamic experience. Along the way, you'll encounter the Ørnhus eagle trapping huts, offering a glimpse into the island’s unique history.

As you climb, the NATO road leads directly to the summit area, where you’ll find the decommissioned radar station. From here, proceed to the breathtaking viewpoint overlooking Måstad’s cliffs and the isolated Puinn beach. The view is both stunning and humbling, but caution is essential—this area has steep, unmarked edges. For an extended adventure, explore the golden plateau near the summit, offering unique perspectives on the rugged coastline and Nupsneset’s towering cliffs.

Difficulty according to Norwegian standards: Blue = medium; hikes suitable for moderately trained hikers with basic hiking knowledge and some experience in the terrain.

Distance: ≈ 6 km
