Nachricht von Hannah Whittaker

Farewell Spit is a 35km stretch of sand extending from Cape Farewell, the northernmost point of the South Island. It has been an internationally recognised and important bird sanctuary since the 1930s and is home to over 90 bird species. The wetland is more strictly protected than a national park!

You cannot access Farewell Spit beyond the first 4km, so if you want to explore further, you must join a guided tour. The best way to experience the entire length of the spit is on a 4WD safari, where your guides will share information on the area, ecosystem, and birdlife! Most tours depart from Collingwood and visit Cape Farewell, Fossil Point, Farewell Spit Lighthouse and the Gannel Colony. If you do plan on visiting, it’s worth booking your tour well in advance as it’s the only way to see the area.
