Forget Bluff, Slope Point is the real southernmost point of mainland New Zealand.

You’ll find a large car park and one toilet when you arrive. From the car park on the road, it is a 20-minute walk through farmland to the point. Walking down, you’ll see windswept trees bent sideways by decades of strong southerly winds. It is completely exposed, so get ready with warm clothes if you plan to visit on a cold, windy day!

It's worth noting that this path is closed for lambing season between September and November.

Personal note: I visited Slope Point during a 2022 road trip across the South Island. After visiting Milford Sound, we crossed the country and detoured here on our way to The Catlins. If you want to say you’ve been to the very edge of the world, this is the spot. But, to be honest, while the clifftop views are stunning, I wasn’t blown away by the place, and they're nothing in comparison to what you could get in places like the West Coast.
