Nestled between the majestic seascape of western Ireland, Blacksod Lighthouse a truly unique story. Established in 1864 and first lit up two years later, this historic landmark stands at the entrance of Blacksod Bay on the Mullet Peninsula with a picturesque keeper's house that has defied the sands of time both figuratively and literally. While most of its exterior remains unpainted, the small conical lantern section atop has been painted white for many years. Most interestingly, and unbeknownst by many, is that the lighthouse keeper, Ted Sweeney, sent a weather report in June 1944 which changed the course of history as it was his data and observations that caused the Normandy landings to be postponed. Fast forward to today, you can visit the same lighthouse as both a historical monument and a testament to the power of meteorology on human destiny.
