For those who want to trade the city for the sea

The ferry from Zadar to Ugljan takes 20 minutes and costs almost nothing. On the other side is a completely different world.

Take the first morning ferry to Ugljan — arrive in Preko before the day has properly started and rent a bicycle from one of the shops near the ferry port. Ride south along the coastal road, stopping whenever the sea looks good enough to swim in. It will look good enough to swim in constantly.

Stop at the Fortress of St. Michael above the village of Ugljan for the view — the Zadar channel below, the city across the water, the islands stretching south in both directions. The climb takes 30 minutes and is completely worth it.

Continue south to Kali for a coffee and a look at the fishing harbour — this is a genuine working fishing village and it feels like one. Then cross the small bridge into Pašman. The road continues south along the western coast, with the water visible almost constantly and small coves appearing at regular intervals below the road.

Swim at one of the coves on the western side of Pašman — the water here is calm, clear, and sees a fraction of the traffic of the more visited beaches. Find a spot that feels like yours and stay for a while.

Lunch at a konoba in Tkon, the main village at the southern tip of Pašman. Fresh fish, local wine, a harbour view. Take your time.

After lunch, catch the ferry from Tkon back to Biograd na Moru on the mainland — a short crossing that gives you a beautiful view of the channel between the islands. Spend the late afternoon walking the Heart of Biograd and the Marina Kornati waterfront, watching the boats come in as the sun drops.

Ferry or drive back to Zadar in the evening.

Tips:

  • Rent a bicycle in Preko rather than bringing one on the ferry — it's easier and the island roads are manageable for all fitness levels

  • The Ugljan to Pašman crossing by bridge is one of those small moments that feels surprisingly satisfying — you've crossed between two islands on a bicycle, which is a good feeling

  • The ferry from Tkon to Biograd runs regularly but check the schedule in advance — missing the last one means staying overnight, which is not the worst outcome but requires a plan

  • Bring cash — ATMs exist on the islands but are not everywhere

  • Pack a picnic lunch as backup — the konobas in smaller villages can be closed midweek outside peak season
