• Download the Jadrolinija app before you go — it has live schedules and you can check departure times on the spot

• The ferry is a roll-on roll-off car ferry but you absolutely don't need a car — foot passengers and bicycles board easily

• Buy your ticket at the small ticket office at the terminal or directly on board — no advance booking needed for foot passengers, just show up a few minutes before departure

• The first ferry of the morning leaves early — check the exact time on the app the night before if you're planning to catch it

• The crossing itself is worth savoring — stay on deck, watch the old town shrink behind you and the island grow in front of you, and resist the urge to go inside
