A short drive away from the town of Chania, in the Cretan countryside and on a very simple location by the side of the road, you will stumble upon a 2,500 year-old olive tree, in the village of Ano Vouves, Kolymvari.

It’s incredible to see the olive tree still being alive and still growing olives, after so many centuries of existence. Scientists from the University of Crete have estimated this tree to be around 4,000 years old. The indicator for this are two cemeteries dating back to the Geometric Period that were found next to the tree. Also, branches from the tree were used to weave victors' wreaths for the winners of the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The tree trunks definitely do show how old this tree is. Definitely a fascinating stop along your Chania road trips!
