The Best Way to Get Around Tunisia is By Louage

If you’re traveling a relatively short distance in Tunisia, the best way to get around (bar renting a car) is by taking a louage. A louage is a shared taxi that can not only take you around within a city, but also to other cities and towns across the country. We found louages to be the best mode of transport to get to places like Dougga. Whatever your destination, just head to a major louage station and simply ask the drivers which louage to take for your intended destination, and they’ll help you.

Do a Road Trip Through Southern Tunisia

Tunisia is one of the best countries for a road trip. We did a road trip from Tunis to Southern Tunisia, and it was easily the highlight of our trip. It’s the best way to get to know the country, and Tunisia is relatively easy to drive around. Just avoid driving around at night, as there aren’t many streetlights, and we’ve heard so many stories from locals who’ve hit camels at night. Yep - camels. That’s more dangerous for you than for them!

With a car, you can get to more remote areas of Tunisia without issue. We did a road trip, hitting destinations like Kairouan, Tozeur, Chebika, Mides, Douz, Matmata, and El Jem.

For Transport within Tunis, Use Bolt

When traveling Tunisia, you’ll likely spend a couple of days (minimum) in the capital city of Tunis. While you can take a louage around Tunis, the best way to get around is to take a Bolt. When you use Bolt, you’ll be calling a standard taxi. While you do pay a premium for using Bolt instead of hailing a taxi from the street, the advantage is that you can’t get overcharged or scammed if you order directly through the app. With that said, we did hail taxis from the street every now and then without issues, but just make sure they use the taxi meter! And NEVER take a taxi from directly in front of a tourist attraction.
