East Java, Indonesia
Fly into Yogyakarta (YIA) if you're starting with the temples and Gunungkidul caves, or straight into Surabaya (SUB)if you'd rather skip Yogyakarta and dive into the East Java volcano-and-waterfall arc (Bromo, Malang, Tumpak Sewu, Ijen). Both have good domestic connections and some international routes via Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore.
Exit east toward Bali via Banyuwangi. After Ijen, head to Banyuwangi and catch the ferry from Ketapang Harbour to Gilimanuk on Bali's west coast. Boats run 24/7, roughly every 30–60 min; the crossing itself takes ~45–60 min (allow longer for loading/queues). Foot passengers pay ~IDR 10,000, a car ~IDR 170,000–200,000. Buy tickets online in advance via the Ferizy app (a scannable QR/booking is now required) and note Bali is one hour ahead (WITA). From Gilimanuk it's still ~3–4 hrs by road to the main Bali hubs, so many people overnight in Banyuwangi and do Ijen as an early-morning trip before crossing.
