Iceland
The best time to visit Iceland depends on what you want to see. Summer (June–August) is ideal for long daylight hours, mild weather, and activities like hiking and whale watching. Winter (November–March) is best for seeing the Northern Lights and ice caves, with potential savings on flights and accommodation. Shoulder seasons (April–May, September–October) offer a balance of decent weather, fewer crowds, and a chance to see the Northern Lights.
Summer (June–August)
Best for: Outdoor activities, long days, midnight sun, and whale watching.
Pros: Longest days and warmest weather, ideal for hiking, road trips, and camping. Wildlife, including puffins and whales, are most active.
Cons: Peak tourist season with higher prices and more crowds.
Specific months:
June: Experience the midnight sun, with almost 24 hours of daylight.
July: Widely considered the warmest month for extended outdoor adventures.
Winter (November–March)
Best for: Northern Lights viewing and ice cave exploration.
Pros: Lower prices for flights and accommodation, fewer tourists outside of the holidays, and chances to see the aurora borealis.
Cons: Limited daylight hours, colder weather, and some attractions may be closed or inaccessible.
Specific months:
January and February: Often good for potential cost savings, and winter weather isn't as severe as many expect.
October to March: The season for ice cave tours.
November: If you're into music, you should consider going to Iceland Airwaves! An annual music festival in the Reykjavik where you get to see international artists perform at unique venues like museums and churches throughout the city. I loved my experience at the festival and is a must for any music lover!
Shoulder Seasons (April–May and September–October)
Best for: A balance of good weather, fewer crowds, and seeing the Northern Lights.
Pros: Less expensive than summer, with fewer tourists. You can still experience some of the best of both seasons.
Cons: Weather can be unpredictable, and daylight hours are decreasing in the autumn.
Specific months:
September: A great compromise for good weather and the start of the Northern Lights season
