Rurikō-in Temple, nestled at the foot of Mt. Hiei in Kyoto, was once a swanky villa turned into a temple. It's only open during spring and fall, but totally worth the visit for its stunning maple leaf views reflected inside on polished floors. You can even try your hand at sutra copying or check out the ancient kamaburo steam bath. Don't miss the Garden of Lapis Lazuli or the Garden of the Reclining Dragon for some serious zen vibes.
