Using AllTrails, Offline Maps & Local Info

Helpful tools, but not something to rely on blindly.

šŸ—ŗļø Map apps are useful in the Rockies - but they should be one tool, not your entire plan.

What I recommend

  • Download offline maps before leaving

  • Use offline navigation whenever possible

  • Check local trail conditions before heading out

  • Compare app info with official park resources

  • Do not rely only on cell service

  • See Parks Canada for the latest National Park trail conditions.

About AllTrails

AllTrails can be helpful for route following and downloadable maps, but:

  • trail conditions can change

  • wildlife closures can happen

  • road access can change

  • route details are not always the full story

That’s why I treat app routes as helpful suggestions, not final truth.

慤

A smarter approach is to use

  • a map app (AllTrails, CalTopo, Gaia etc)

  • local trail updates

  • official park info

  • your own judgement

All four together are way better than blindly following one app. Technology helps, but in the mountains, awareness still matters more.

šŸ“Use the map. But also use your brain.
