Madeira, Portugal
1. Funchal to Pico do Arieiro
Climb from the coast to 1,818 meters for sunrise above the clouds. The drive takes about 40 minutes, with hairpin turns and sweeping views the whole way. Start before dawn to catch the colors from the top.
2. Encumeada Pass Ridge Road
One of Madeira’s most breathtaking mountain roads, this route connects the north and south coasts with constant views of valleys, peaks, and the Laurissilva forest. Stop at Miradouro da Encumeada for panoramic vistas.
3. Fanal Forest to Ribeira da Janela
A moody drive through ancient laurel trees before descending toward dramatic sea stacks on the north coast. Best after rain when the forest is misty.
4. Seixal to Porto Moniz Coastal Road
This stretch hugs rugged cliffs with waterfalls spilling directly onto the road (like Cascata dos Anjos). Black sand beaches and natural volcanic pools make perfect stops along the way.
5. Achadas da Cruz Cable Car Route
A hidden gem on the west coast, this short detour leads to one of the steepest cable cars in Europe. Ride down to a quiet coastal plain with towering cliffs behind you.
6. Santana to Ponta de São Lourenço
From the traditional houses in Santana to the desert‑like cliffs of São Lourenço, this drive showcases Madeira’s contrasting landscapes — lush forest to barren peninsula in under an hour.
7. Paul da Serra Plateau Road
Madeira’s only flat stretch, this high plateau feels like another planet. Endless wind farms, wide open skies, and occasional cows grazing near the road make it one of the island’s most unique drives.
8. Funchal to Cape Girão
A quick but rewarding drive to Europe’s highest sea cliff skywalk. Combine with Câmara de Lobos for a colorful fishing village stop and traditional poncha tasting.
9. Raposeira to Ponta da Ladeira Sunset Route
Wind along the quiet west coast to two of Madeira’s most underrated viewpoints. Raposeira is ideal for golden hour and Ponta da Ladeira is perfect for a dramatic farewell sunset.
10. North Coast Loop (São Vicente to Porto Moniz)
Combine waterfalls, sea tunnels, and cliff‑edge roads on this classic loop. Stop at Miradouro do Véu da Noiva, Ribeira da Janela, and Seixal for iconic coastal views.
