The Kuranda Scenic Railway is hands-down one of the most iconic ways to get to or from Kuranda and honestly, it’s an experience in itself. The heritage train winds its way through the rainforest from Cairns to Kuranda, passing waterfalls, steep ravines, and incredible views over Barron Gorge. The ride’s full of history too, with commentary about how the railway was built back in the 1800s, pretty wild considering the terrain! You can grab a window seat, kick back, and just soak up the scenery while the train slowly climbs through the lush ranges.

It runs daily, with departures from Cairns and Freshwater stations in the morning, and return trips from Kuranda in the afternoon. Tickets start at around $57 for adults and $28 for kids, depending on the class you choose. Whether you take it one way and bus back or make a full day of it, the Kuranda Scenic Railway is one of those classic FNQ adventures you’ve gotta do at least once.
