Important things to know about taking your car, van, RV or trailer to Nova Scotia.
We drove our RV from Florida to Nova Scotia for a one month road trip. While it seems like a far distance, taking your own RV, van or trailer to Nova Scotia is quite common and a super convenient way to explore the peninsula.
If you are not a Canadian Citizen or resident you will need a valid passport to travel to Nova Scotia. The border crossing agent will also request your active license and registration.
If you plan to drive your RV the entire way, you can cross into New Brunswick from Maine. There are several border crossing options, most of which are small towns with one person station to check passports and inspect vehicles.
From there, you'll drive 450 miles through New Brunswick before reaching Nova Scotia. This trip takes around 7 hours roughly from the border crossing in Maine.
The alternative to driving seven hours is taking the high-speed CAT ferry from Bar Harbor Maine to Nova Scotia. This is how we started our Nova Scotia road trip returning through New Brunswick back to the USA. The 3.5-hour ferry ride was a great way to cut down time behind the wheel and get to relax on a ferry with scenic views, onboard entertainment, wifi, and comfortable seating.
Pets can stay in your vehicle or RV which is nice! Prices are charged by vehicle length and reservations are required. See rates and common questions here.
If you take the ferry you will immediately get to a border crossing station for inspection and permission to enter Canada. So have your passport and other items given to you on the ferry for approval.
Reminder, you can not enter Canada if you are convicted of a crime INCLUDING A DUI! They will turn you away at the border. You also cannot enter with:
🚫 firearms or ammunition
🚫 fresh produce or meats,
🚫 alcohol in certain quantities
🚫 cannabis products (even if it's for medical use)
Always check the Canadian requirements before crossing to make sure you aren't accidentally bringing a prohibited item with you.
While it's not a requirement, most agents will request to inspect inside your trailer or RV at the border crossing. They typically do a quick visual check, however they may request to see inside any safe's. Have your key with you to allow them access.
