Paying, Tipping and Tap Water in Vienna

Cards are widely accepted in Vienna, but keeping a small amount of cash is still useful for markets, smaller venues and unexpected card minimums. Check the bill before paying and tell the server the total amount you want to pay, including the tip.

A tip of around 5–10% is customary when you are happy with the service, although it is not compulsory. In many restaurants and coffeehouses, simply leaving money on the table is less common than stating the rounded total when you pay.

Vienna’s tap water is excellent and safe to drink. Bring a reusable bottle — public drinking fountains around the city make it easy to refill while exploring.
