The otherworldly Skazka Canyon or Fairytale Canyon has emerged as one of the must visit places in Kyrgyzstan. You've likely seen it on Instagram, where photographers head to at sunset or sunrise for the light and shadows to work magic over the canyon's layers.

It can be found west of Karakol on the shore of Issyk Kul lake. It's easily reached not far off the main road, making it quite accessible. There are several trails and viewpoints in the canyon where you can admire the view of the rock formations and interesting colours of the layers. It does get very busy so be prepared to be around a lot of tourists.

How to get there? Take any marshrutka from Karakol going along the southern shore of Issyk Kul to Balykchy and ask to be dropped at Skazka or Fairytale Canyon. It should take about 2 hours, and then you'll have to walk up to the main entrance. You can flag any marshrutka on the main road to get back (or hitchhike).

When to go? It's at its most beautiful at sunrise or sunset, but to be there at this time you'll likely either have to have your own vehicle or stay nearby.

Staying nearby? Tosor is the nearest village and only 7km from the canyon entrance. We chose to stay there for a night and hitchhike to the canyon and back easily. There are a few basic guesthouses in Tosor, or you can find yurt camps on the shore of Issyk Kul lake too.
