Ala-Too Square is the central square in Bishkek city. Translating to "great mountain", it's meant to symbolise the mountain ranges that surround the city and can be seen from the square itself.
It's one of the best examples of Soviet style architecture. You’ll find a fountain in the middle of the square, surrounded by some cafes and shops. Across the road, the prominent statue of the legendary Aikal Manas sitting on his horse is elevated above (it replaced the statue of Lenin which was there during the Soviet Union, and has now been moved behind the museum building).
Next to the statue is a giant Kyrgyz flag, where you’ll find guards who change every few hours. It’s cool to be there to watch the changing of the guard, if you can time it right.
Behind the statue is the State History Museum, while Oak Park lies to the east and the Parliament building is to the west. The square is definitely the centre of culture, history and politics in Bishkek.
