Horse riding to Song Kul has become one of the most quintessential experiences in Kyrgyzstan. It’s often described as the highlight of Central Asia and I’m sure you’ve seen travellers galloping along open fields near a lake on social media: this is generally at Song Kul.
Most of the horse treks to Song Kul are three days long, but it's possible to extend to four days for an extra day at the lake. The treks are guided with a local horse rider, who will also carry your gear in their saddle bags.
Along the way you'll stay in yurt camps, both in the mountains and at the lake itself. Different guides and tour companies use slightly different routes and camps, so not all groups follow the exact same trails.
You do not need horse riding experience, but it is advantageous.
How to book? While it's possible to book online, I highly recommend waiting to book directly with an agency or local guide in the country. You can book through your guesthouse in Kochkor or Kyzart, at the CBT Office (community tourism) in Kochkor, or even directly with a local guide on Instagram (I've seen some travel influencers recommending guides).
