The Orthodox Church in the centre of Karakol is one of the most distinct and beautiful landmarks in town. It's worth visiting for its really unique architecture, made from wood with intricate details of gold and blue to reflect the local culture.

The church was originally established in the 1860s to serve the Cossacks who were sent to Karakol in the Russian Empire. The church was destroyed in an earthquake and had to be rebuilt in 1895. It was the tallest building in town at one time, but now you can still see the golden tower from afar.

During Soviet times it fell into disrepair, but it has since been restored to its former glory. It's worth just going in for a visit and to admire the incredibly unique architecture.
