Best Time To Visit Madeira
Is there a best time to visit Madeira?
Elizaveta Gutierrez
Madeira, Portugal
Yes but it really depends on what kind of trip you want.
Madeira has one of the kindest climates in Europe but it is random, it can start drizzling out of no where like now in May in the Spring. You can come any month and still have a good time being prepared. But the difference between seasons is massive when it comes to crowds, prices, hiking conditions.
April to June or September to October are the sweet spots for most people. Warm enough for swimming, green and beautiful for levadas, way fewer crowds than summer, and prices that actually feel fair. Most other times especially around festivals the island has been fabricated in costs around it, like a natural island Disneyland for all.
Here’s how the seasons actually play out when you live here:
Spring (March–May)
Flower season hits different. Everyone is about showcasing what is blooming, levadas are full of water, and the Flower Festival in late April/early May turns Funchal into a carpet of petals and parades. Temps sit around 18–22°C perfect for hiking without sweating or slipping. Still super quiet after winter.
Summer (June–September)
Sunniest and warmest (24–27°C) with the sea finally nice for proper swimming. Great if you want beach days and pool time. BUT July and especially August get packed with cruise ships and Europeans on holiday. Prices jump heavily, levadas feel like highways, you can feel the traffic build up in the cities like Funchal and restaurant tables are harder to get.
Autumn (September–October)
This is my personal favourite. The sea is still warm from summer, light is golden, prices drop, and the island starts feeling like it belongs to the locals again. October often gives you the best of both worlds, beautiful weather and breathing room.
Winter (November–February)
Mild (16–20°C), cheapest flights and hotels, minimal crowds except for downtown when the festival takes place. You can hike in peace and the south coast still gets plenty of sunny days. Yes, it rains more (especially up north or in the mountains), but a quick short shower is normal even in summer. Perfect if you want the authentic side of Madeira without the tourist rush.
Festivals I Have Enjoyed
Madeira Carnival
This is one of the biggest carnivals in Europe, packed with real samba energy thanks to the island’s big Brazilian community. Dates change every year depending on Lent, but it always lands in February. If you love dancing and parties, this is the absolute best time to visit.
Madeira Flower Festival
The Flower Festival isn’t for anyone with hay fever! All through May, Funchal turns into a floral wonderland. It kicks off with the adorable Children’s Parade where hundreds of local kids march through the streets carrying flowers and build the famous Wall of Hope in Praça do Município. The rest of the month is full of flower displays, parades, concerts, and magic everywhere.
Madeira Atlantic Festival
June brings the Atlantic Festival — one of the biggest parties of the whole year. Think huge fireworks shows, open-air concerts, and beach parties that go late. There are also smaller cultural events like the Regional Arts Week woven in.
Christmas & New Year in Madeira
Who doesn’t love Christmas here? In December the whole of Funchal is full of annual lights and one of the biggest firworks displays. On the 23rd everyone heads to the Christmas Night Market for food and drinks, then spends quiet family time before New Year’s Eve. That week is massive, this tiny island holds one of the world’s biggest fireworks display!
Christmas doesn’t end until Three Kings’ Day on January 6th. That’s when kids finally get their presents and the island throws huge open air concerts called Cantar os Reis (“Sing the Kings”). Entire families partake in the celebrations.
My Suggestions?
Skip July & August unless you love crowds and higher prices
Book Easter, Christmas and New Year way in advance they fill up fast
Choose the south coast if you want more sun the north is greener and wetter, consider the microclimate magic that can suprise you randomly but it is peaceful and magical if you seek a retreat. I have many hidden gems for accomedation in the north.
