Are there still hidden gems in Madeira?

Yes and the best ones are the quiet corners even most locals don’t talk about.

If you want that “wow, this is the real Madeira” feeling, rent a car and head to these secret spots. They’re easy to reach, never crowded, and show you the wild, authentic side of the island.

@Achadas do cruz cable car & Fajã da Quebrada Nova

The steepest cable car in Europe drops you into a tiny, isolated farming village between cliffs and the ocean. No tourists, just banana plantations, wild goats, and total peace. We pack a picnic and pretend the world doesn’t exist.

Rocha do Navio Nature Reserve

A dramatic black pebble beach you reach by a tiny local cable car or a short walk. Crystal water, huge cliffs, and almost zero people. Perfect for kids to splash and dogs to run free.

Garganta Funda Waterfall, Madeira viewpoint

A hidden waterfall that crashes straight into the ocean. The road is narrow and a bit adventurous, but the view is insane. We go early morning when the light is soft and it feels like our own private show.

Prainha do Caniçal (near Caniçal)

A small, wild black-sand beach tucked away on the east coast. Calm water in summer, dramatic waves in winter. Locals come here for picnics — never the big tourist crowds.

Jardim do Mar & Paul do Mar

Two tiny fishing villages on the southwest coast with colorful houses stacked on cliffs. Walk the narrow streets, grab fresh fish at a local spot, and watch the sunset from the sea wall. Pure old Madeira.

Miradouro do Farol da Ponta do Pargo, Madeira

The westernmost point of the island. Empty cliffs, endless Atlantic views, and a lighthouse you can walk right up to. We love it at golden hour when the light turns everything magical.

My real tips from living here:

- Go mid-week and early in the morning — that’s when these spots feel truly secret

- Always check the weather — north coast spots can get windy fast

- Bring snacks, water, and reef shoes (many beaches are rocky)

- Respect the locals — these are their quiet places, so leave no trace
