Is Madeira good for families with kids?

Yes, it’s surprisingly one of the best family and safest destinations in Europe! (outside of some dangerous hikes ofcourse) But only if you plan for a good mix of gentle adventures, beach time, and downtime.

If your kids are tiny toddlers or you want non stop theme parks and sandy beaches all day, it might feel a bit limited. But if you’re looking for nature filled days, safe outdoor fun, and magical moments they’ll remember forever, Madeira does that well. It’s the perfect mix of dramatic landscapes and family friendly vibes. Locals are family oriented and love kids, sometimes too much that they just want to high five or pick yours up. This was a cultural shock at first coming from the mainland where you are in constant protection.

Madeira is lush, green, and safe with short flat levadas, play parks, lifeguard protected volcanic pools, and calm swimming spots that kids go crazy for. My own daughter was born here and grew up exploring these places with her two pups.

What I personally love doing with mine after years living here:

- Monte Palace Tropical Garden, Funchal, Madeira (flamingos, ponds, exotic plants, playground energy — they can run for hours)

- Easy levadas like Ribeiro Frio Trout Farm or Levada do Castelejo (flat forest paths, minimal cliff sides, zero stress)

- Natural rock pools like Porto Moniz (safe lava pools kids can splash in all day)

- Praia da Calheta beach or Praia Formosa days (sand, calm water, ice cream and playgrounds)

- Yellow submarine boat trip or gentle dolphin watching

- Funchal parks like Santa Catarina with ducks and playgrounds

My real tips from living here with a child:

- Rent a car with proper booster seats (public buses are tough with kids and strollers)

- Pregnant women or with kids occasionally get priority in lines etc, that culture still exists here where in most cases it is dead in other parts of the world

- Base yourself in Funchal, Calheta or Machico, hotels with indoor pools are a lifesaver when it rains

- Always pack rain jackets + snacks. Weather changes fast!

- Book cable car and popular activities online to skip lines

- Choose shorter activities in the morning

- Many restaurants have kid menus and high chairs (ask for it)

I offer 1-on-1 consultation calls to make your whole trip calm, easy, and special.
