Porto Santo

Golden Beaches or Skip It? My Real Opinion on Porto Santo

So when people ask me if Porto Santo beach is worth visiting, here’s my straight answer:

Yes BUT make the most of a truly relaxing escape if you stay overnight (ideally 2–3 nights).

If your trip is focused on steep levadas, dense forests and epic cliffs, you can happily skip it. But if you crave proper beach relaxation mixed with gentle adventures, Porto Santo is pure magic and the perfect contrast to Madeira.

Porto Santo is the calm, golden sister island to lush and dramatic Madeira. It has the longest beach in the whole archipelago, 9 km of soft, warm sand known for its natural therapeutic properties. Think turquoise water and a beautifully slow pace.

A quick day trip by ferry (2.5 hours each way) usually feels rushed and leaves people a bit disappointed. You barely get to enjoy the beach and miss the real relaxed island vibe.

What I personally love after multiple visits:

- Quinta das Palmeiras family activities, horse back riding, biking and more

- Barefoot walks on endless golden soft sand

- Calm swimming in clear warm water in the summer

- Easy hikes like Pico Ana Ferreira (feels like another planet)

- Quiet hidden viewpoints and natural tidal pools

- Fresh fish dinners with little tourism

My real tips from living here:

- Don't rely on taxis or bolt when you arrive on the ferry, practically imossible to get a ride. Locals have a family member pick them up or hire a service in advance.

- We loved renting e-bikes when we arrive, the island is small but best explored at your own pace.

- Bring reef shoes for rocky areas and good walking shoes for hikes.

- Go outside July–August if you want it even quieter.

- The sand is naturally from there. Many locals believe that Porto Santo's golden sands hold therapeutic properties. They claim that the sand's natural composition, combined with the island's unique climate, can help alleviate various ailments, including arthritis and rheumatism.
