Japanese insight
A temple that defies the traditional Japanese image of wooden pagodas. As a direct temple of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha sect, it stands as a unique architectural landmark, blending Eastern and Western influences into a magnificent spiritual sanctuary.
Ancient Indian Influence The current Main Hall, completed in 1934, was designed by Dr. Chuta Ito, a renowned architect and professor at Tokyo Imperial University.
Exotic Design: The exterior is modeled after ancient Indian and Asian Buddhist architecture, featuring heavy stone walls and a massive dome.
Hidden Animals: Keep an eye out for curious stone carvings throughout the building. Dr. Ito’s love for traveling the world is reflected in the figures of lions, elephants, peacocks, and mythical creatures hidden in the architecture.
Tsukiji Hongwanji Cafe Tsumugi The on-site cafe has become a destination in itself, particularly for its breakfast service.
The "18-Dish Breakfast": Inspired by the 18th vow of Amida Buddha, this famous set features 16 small side dishes porridge, and miso soup. Visually stunning as it is healthy.
Admission: Free (The temple is open to everyone regardless of faith).
Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 4:00 PM (Cafe hours vary; breakfast often requires an early arrival or reservation).
