Japanese insight

Japan’s premier wholesale district for the restaurant industry. Stretching nearly 800 meters, this street is lined with over 170 shops selling everything from industrial ovens to the tiniest garnish cutters. While it is a professional-grade market, it is a fascinating "theme park" for anyone who loves cooking or high-quality Japanese craftsmanship.

My recommendations are,

  • Professional Knives (Hocho) This is one of the best places in the world to buy a Japanese knife. Shops here cater to Michelin-starred chefs, offering everything from stainless steel to hand-forged carbon steel blades. Many shops offer name engraving services on the spot, making for a truly one-of-a-kind souvenir or professional tool.

  • Ceramics & Tableware: Sake Cups (Ochoko) If you are looking for beautiful Japanese pottery, the selection here is overwhelming. You can find exquisite Ochoko (sake cups) in various styles, from delicate porcelain to rustic stoneware. It’s the perfect place to find a unique vessel to enjoy your favorite sake back home.

  • Chopsticks & Chopstick Rests (Hashi-oki) Kappabashi offers an endless variety of chopsticks made from fine woods and lacquer. Don't forget to look for Hashi-oki (chopstick rests)—they come in thousands of playful shapes, like sushi, vegetables, or seasonal flowers, and make for light, perfect gifts.Even a guitar and a skate board one!

  • The World of Food Samples (Shokuhin Sample) One of the most fun experiences in the district is seeing the ultra-realistic plastic food replicas used in restaurant windows. They are incredibly detailed from glistening ramen bowls to "frozen" splashes of beer. Many shops sell smaller versions as keychains or magnets, and some even offer workshops where you can try making your own!
