Japanese insight

While the famous inner wholesale market has moved to Toyosu, the Tsukiji Outer Market (Jogai Shijo) remains the undisputed heart of Tokyo’s food culture. It is a vibrant, bustling labyrinth of narrow alleys where over 400 shops and restaurants serve locals and travelers alike.

  • The Early Bird Gets the Best Bite Tsukiji is a morning world. Many shops begin opening as early as 5:00 AM, and the market is in full swing by 8:00 AM or 9:00 AM.

    • Why go early? To beat the heavy tourist crowds that arrive after 10:00 AM. Visiting around 7:00 AM or 8:00 AM allows you to enjoy a peaceful breakfast and see the market’s professional energy before it becomes a "tourist jam."

    • Note on Timing: Most shops start closing by 2:00 PM, so don’t plan for a late dinner here! Also, keep in mind that many shops close on Sundays and Wednesdays.

  • The Seafood Paradise You are absolutely right—seafood is the king here. This is the best place in the city to find high-quality fish that was swimming in the ocean just hours before.

    • Kaisendon (Seafood Bowls): A bowl of rice topped with a colorful array of sashimi (tuna, uni, ikura, and scallops) is the ultimate Tsukiji breakfast.

    • Tuna (Maguro): Tsukiji is world-famous for its bluefin tuna. Look for stalls selling "Maguro-kushi" (tuna skewers) or specialized tuna nigiri.

    • Street Food Gems: Don’t miss the Tamagoyaki (sweet rolled omelet on a stick), fresh grilled scallops with butter, or oversized oysters served raw.
