Japanese insight
The Origin: This shrine was built to appease the restless spirit and curse of Sugawara no Michizane, a brilliant 9th-century scholar and politician who died in exile.
The Deity of Wisdom: Now revered as the "God of Learning," it is a major pilgrimage site for students. Gently rub the head of the "Shingo" (sacred bronze bull) to receive a blessing of wisdom and intelligence.
Lucky "Omikuji" (Fortune Slips): The shrine is packed with students before winter exams. In a rare gesture of support, their Omikuji contains no "Kyo" (Bad Luck) results, ensuring every visitor leaves with a positive outlook for their future.
My photo of the main hall is temporary but a unique one with a garen on top!
New hall will is said to be completed in Summer of 2026.

Step into a world of tranquility and learning at Dazaifu Tenmangu, a shrine dedicated to the deity of education. As you wander through the grounds, you'll pass under ancient camphor trees and cross picturesque arched bridges over a heart-shaped pond. The main hall is currently undergoing a once-in-a-century renovation, but in its place stands a stunning temporary hall with a forest on its roof, a truly unique sight. Be sure to allow time to explore the lively street leading to the shrine, filled with charming shops and local treats.
