Japanese Insight
Perched atop the 26m (85 ft) high Mount Atago the highest natural point in the 23 wards of Tokyo, Atago Shrine is a hidden sanctuary of tradition amidst the towering skyscrapers of Minato-ku.
Founded in 1603 by order of Ieyasu Tokugawa, this shrine is famous for its history of "Tokugawa" , a legendary steep staircase that is said to be the key to career advancement and good fortune.

  • The approach to the shrine is an experience in itself. The "Stone Steps of Success" are notoriously steep and daunting, stretching straight up from the base of the hill. Legend says that a young samurai, Magaki Heikuro, once famously rode his horse up these stairs to deliver plum blossoms to the Shogun, earning instant fame and a promotion. Today, climbing these stairs is seen as a symbolic act of dedication and a prayer for career progress.

  • For those who prefer a gentler ascent, there is a modern elevator hidden to the side, allowing you to reach the summit with ease.
