All my tips for northern lights viewing and capturing :)
Seeing the northern lights is often a huge reason for people to visit the Yukon, and it can be a little tricky to figure out, so here are a few of my tips :)
You need to get outside of the city lights! If you have a vehicle, this is great. A few easy locations are the end of Fish Lake Road and Annie Lake Road. Both have large open areas that give you a good chance of seeing the lights! (Check out my full guide to see exact locations that are great for northern lights viewing.)
You need to choose the right time of year. You will not see the northern lights in the summer, as it does not get dark enough during this time of year! Late August to April are your best chances for seeing them!
If you want a more luxurious experience, there are plenty of northern lights viewing companies you can book with that have warming areas and snacks!
Most phones now can take amazing Northern Lights photos, and there are many tutorials online to teach you how to get the perfect shot! You just need a steady hand, and your phone should be able to pick up the lights in the sky! If you want to video yourself with them, use the back camera, turn on your flash and make sure the lights are in view before you film. This should allow you to be visible with the lights behind you in your video!
Be patient! The lights are out often during the winter; you just need clear weather! They will come in waves with very active periods throughout the night! Make sure you drink some coffee beforehand! :)
And finally, dress appropriately! I have cried from thawing feet after taking photos of the northern lights. Don't be like me! Wear layers, proper boots, snow pants, a winter jacket, a warm hat and mittens! You need to be able to last outside for a while for the best show, so you need to make sure you are comfortable!
