Money in Belarus
Cards, Cash & money exchange

Minsk, Belarus
Because of sanctions, not all foreign bank cards work reliably in Belarus. Some cards may work in one place and not in another — so it’s best not to rely on just one payment method.
💡 My main advice:
Bring all the cards you have from different banks, and also bring cash.
You’re allowed to bring up to $10,000 USD (or equivalent) without declaring it. Once you’re in Belarus, you can exchange foreign currency like US dollars or euros into Belarusian rubles at local banks.
🏦 Banks and exchange offices are everywhere — not only in Minsk, but even in small towns. In Minsk, you’ll find many bank branches and exchange points, especially inside shopping malls. Often, there are several exchange offices in one area, so you can easily compare rates.
✔️ Important good news:
Belarusian banks do not charge extra commission for currency exchange. So just look at the rate displayed at the entrance and choose the best one that day.
Important!
When you arrive in Belarus with foreign currency (euros or US dollars), it’s very important to make sure your banknotes are in perfect condition.
They should have:
• no tears
• no heavy folds or damage
• no stains
• no drawings or marks
The bills should look clean and almost new.
If your banknotes are damaged or marked, banks and exchange offices in Belarus may charge an additional commission when exchanging them.
This is very important to know in advance.
If most of your cash is not in good condition, you could lose a noticeable amount of money due to these extra fees.
So before traveling, always check your cash carefully — it can save you both money and stress.
