The National Library of Belarus is truly one of Minsk’s must-see landmarks. It’s not just a vast collection of books but a modern, multifunctional center showcasing unique architecture and cutting-edge technology.

The library’s history goes back to 1922 when it was founded as part of the Belarusian State University. Over the years, it grew into an independent institution, surviving massive losses during World War II. The iconic building we see today — often called the “Belarusian diamond” — was designed by architects Viktor Kramarenko and Mikhail Vinogradov and opened in 2006.

The building’s shape is inspired by a complex polyhedron called a rhombicuboctahedron, symbolizing the priceless value of knowledge and the endless world of learning. It stands 74 meters tall with a stunning glass façade that lights up beautifully at night.

Inside the library, you’ll find millions of books, rare manuscripts, digital archives, and over 20 reading rooms equipped with modern technology. The library is more than just a place for reading — it hosts cultural events, exhibitions, international meetings, and has an open-air skydeck with panoramic views of Minsk.

Getting there is easy — take the metro to the Vostok station or buses and trolleybuses to stops named “National Library.” It’s a perfect blend of culture, history, and modernity worth visiting.
