Highlights
Caldeirão Verde is one of Madeira's most scenic levada trails, leading hikers through lush Laurissilva forest and lush landscapes to a stunning waterfall. The route is characterised by its narrow pathways, tunnels carved into the rock, and spellbinding views of valleys and cliffs. The final destination, Caldeirão Verde, rewards hikers with an enchanting waterfall cascading into an emerald lagoon surrounded by towering cliffs.
Starting point
The trail begins at Queimadas Forest Park, a picturesque area renowned for its traditional thatched- roof houses that resemble something from a fairytale. Nestled within the Laurissilva forest, the park offers a tranquil atmosphere and well-maintained facilities, including picnic spots and restrooms. It’s an ideal starting point for nature lovers, with towering trees and lush greenery setting the stage for the adventure ahead.
Tips
Footwear: Wear sturdy hiking boots, as sections of the trail can be slippery and narrow.
Gear: Bring a flashlight or headlamp, as some tunnels have low ceilings, uneven ground, and can be slippery. Also, ensure you have enough water and snacks for the journey.
Caution: The levada path is narrow with steep drops, so caution is essential, especially in wet weather.
Trail Fee: From 1st January 2025, a €3 fee applies to hike this official trail. Tickets can be purchased online at Simplifica Madeira.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and early summer are ideal, as the forest is lush, and the weather is generally stable. Morning hikes offer cooler temperatures and fewer crowds.
The Caldeirão Verde trail is a magical journey into Madeira’s natural wonders, offering a serene and awe- inspiring experience that is perfect for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
