Kalives is a charming seaside village in the Apokoronas region of Chania, situated along Souda Bay, 19 km east of Chania. Apokoronas is one of the greenest areas in western Crete, offering a breathtaking blend of natural beauty, from forests, rolling hills, and towering mountains to the sparkling Greek sea and traditional Cretan architecture.

Built amphitheatrically along Kalives Beach, the village is nestled between two hills and is divided by the Xydas River. The river, crossed by charming stone bridges, adds a unique character to the village, and visitors can often spot ducks swimming in its waters.

Thanks to the presence of the Xydas River, as well as the Kylaris River, which flows west of the village, Kalives sits in a lush and fertile valley surrounded by olive groves. This abundance of greenery creates a refreshing oasis, especially during the warm summer nights.

Kalives has been inhabited since ancient times, largely due to its fertile land and strategic location at the entrance of Souda Bay. To the east of the village once stood ancient Kissamos (not to be confused with modern-day Kissamos Kasteli), one of the two ports of the ancient city of Aptera. The ruins of Castello Apicorono can also be found in the eastern hills of Kalives. In the 16th century, the village was destroyed by the pirate Barbarossa, and in the following centuries, it became a battleground during various phases of the Cretan Revolution.

Today, Kalives has grown into a popular tourist destination while still maintaining its traditional charm. The village offers a variety of small hotels, apartments, tavernas, shops, cafés, and essential services such as banks, a post office, a pharmacy, and a medical center.

The main beach of Kalives stretches for about 500 meters, featuring soft golden sand and shallow, inviting waters. One of its greatest advantages is the presence of large trees providing natural shade. The beach has been awarded the Blue Flag for its cleanliness and safety and is monitored by a lifeguard, ensuring a comfortable and secure experience for visitors.

For those seeking a quieter spot, there is a smaller and less developed beach on the other side of the Xydas River, offering a more secluded and peaceful swimming experience.
