Orthi Ammos is a sandy beach with shallow, crystal-clear waters, located near Frangokastelo, about 80 km south of Chania. Its name means "deep sand" in Greek.
Positioned at the edge of a vast valley with a warm climate, the area has seen only mild development, unlike the more tourist-heavy neighboring region of Frangokastelo.
The beach is best known for its impressive sand dunes, which have been naturally shaped over time. While it can be affected by southern winds, they are usually not too strong. Traditionally, the eastern part of the beach has been popular among nudists, although their presence has decreased in recent years.
You can reach Orthi Ammos with a 10-minute walk from Frangokastelo or by parking above the sand dunes. However, be mindful that the sand can become extremely hot when descending to the shore!
Compared to the busier Frangokastelo, Orthi Ammos offers a more peaceful atmosphere. However, amenities are minimal—there are only a few accommodation and dining options, and the beach does not offer sunbeds or water sports facilities. The easternmost section, known as Kritama, is particularly scenic, featuring dramatic cliffs and stunning turquoise waters.
