New Zealand

Lupins in New Zealand were originally planted across the Mackenzie Country to improve soil quality but have since spread rapidly, becoming both a visual highlight and an ecological concern. They now grow along riverbeds, impacting native habitats and species, which has sparked ongoing debate—though for now, they remain one of the South Island’s most iconic seasonal sights. And last November we had to go see what the hype was all about!

When to visit?

Lupin season usually begins in mid-November, with peak blooms best seen from the last week of November to the first week of December (which is when we travelled too), though timing can vary each year depending on weather.

Here are 2 great blog articles of where to experience lupins, with google map links and descriptions:

We especially loved Ahuriri River Lookout, Glenorchy, Lake Tekapo Footbridge and foreshore, and Lake Pukaki for spotting these colourful blooms!
