Praça do Rossio ("Rossio Square") is most likely the heart of the city and has been a relevant spot in old Lisbon since the Middle Ages. Paying homage to Dom Pedro IV ("King Pedro IV") of Portugal (the monarch you see in the statue up in the obelisk at the center of the square), who is also known as Dom Pedro I from a Brazilian perspective (Brazil's first emperor), this square connects Praça dos Restauradores ("Restauradores Square") to Lisbon's Pombaline downtown area, including Rua Augusta and Praça do Comércio ("Commerce Square").

It is famous for its typical waves-like Portuguese pavement, installed in the 19th century, which have inspired the sidewalks of Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Rossio train station is a remarkable 19th-century building in neo-manueline style, which is located at the upper side of the square.

Moving from shops and restaurants to nearby monuments and attractions in Lisbon's historic center, Praça do Rossio might very likely be on your way.
