đ The Best Time to Visit Japan: Month-by-Month Guide
Choosing when to book your trip completely changes your Japan experience. Here is my breakdown of what to expect every month, including temperatures, crowd levels, and my personal favorites!
âď¸ Winter (Low Crowds & Snow Seasons)
đď¸ December
Temperature: 5°C â 12°C (41°F â 54°F)
Crowds: Low to Moderate
My Advice: You can still catch some late autumn colors early in the month, alongside spectacular winter illumination (light-up) events across every major city. It's generally not too crowded, making it a peaceful, festive time to explore.
đď¸ January
Temperature: 2°C â 10°C (35°F â 50°F) Note: Hokkaido is significantly colder.
Crowds: Low overall, except for Peak Crowds from January 1st to 3rd.
My Advice: I do not recommend visiting major shrines during the first week of January due to Hatsumode (the traditional first shrine visit of the year), when lines can take hours. However, it is a magnificent month for winter sports, skiing, or exploring Hokkaido's snowy landscapes!
đď¸ February
Temperature: 2°C â 12°C (35°F â 54°F)
Crowds: Low
My Advice: A highly underrated month to visit! You get to experience the stunning winter snow festivals in the northern regions (like Sapporo) and see the beautiful, early plum blossoms blooming toward the end of the month.
đ¸ Spring (Cherry Blossoms)
đď¸ March
Temperature: 5°C â 16°C (41°F â 61°F)
Crowds: Starts to get crowded
My Advice: Early cherry blossoms begin blooming in late March. The weather is crisp, but keep in mind that the tourism rush starts picking up heavily mid-month.
đď¸ April
Temperature: 10°C â 20°C (50°F â 68°F)
Crowds: Extremely Peak Crowded
My Advice: The first two weeks are prime cherry blossom season. This is the busiest and most expensive time of the entire year to visit Japan. You must book your flights, hotels, and main activities months in advance, as things completely sell out.
đď¸ May âââââ
(My Favorite!)
Temperature: 15°C â 24°C (59°F â 75°F)
Crowds: Low to Moderate (Except Golden Week)
My Advice: One of my absolute favorite months! The country is incredibly lush and green, it isn't humid yet, and you get perfect spring weather before the summer heat hits. The big catch: You must be careful around Golden Week (late April to early May). During this national holiday week, trains, hotels, and attractions are completely packed with domestic travelers, and Shinkansen (bullet train) seats must be reserved far in advance.
âď¸ Summer (Festivals, Rain & Intense Heat)
đď¸ June
Temperature: 19°C â 26°C (66°F â 79°F)
Crowds: Low
My Advice: June is incredibly green and beautiful, but it is officially the rainy season. The weather can be completely unpredictableâsome years it rains for weeks straight, while others only get light showers. Grab an umbrella and visit if you don't mind the rain! Personally, I really enjoy the quiet, moody vibe of this season.
đď¸ July
Temperature: 24°C â 31°C (75°F â 88°F)
Crowds: Moderate to High
My Advice: July has amazing summer festivals, the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto, and fireworks. However, it is intensely hot and humid. Personally, I would not recommend visiting right now if you struggle with high heat.
đď¸ August
Temperature: 26°C â 33°C (79°F â 91°F)
Crowds: Crowded
My Advice: I do not recommend visiting in August. It is sweltering, humid, and the heat stays intense even through the night. On top of that, the mid-August Obon holiday means millions of domestic tourists are traveling. Cities, festivals, and hotels are heavily booked and very crowded.
đ Autumn (Fall Colors & Perfect Weather)
đď¸ September
Temperature: 21°C â 28°C (70°F â 82°F)
Crowds: Moderate to Low
My Advice: Crowds drop nicely, but September is typhoon season, so you have to keep a close eye on weather forecasts. It technically starts cooling down, but it is still quite warm, I frequently see tourists still struggling with the lingering summer heat this month.
đď¸ October âââââ
(My Favorite!)
Temperature: 15°C â 22°C (59°F â 72°F)
Crowds: Moderate
My Advice: Another one of my top favorite months! The weather is a perfect "after-summer" breeze, everything is still vibrant and green, but the insane heat is totally gone. It's the ultimate month for hiking and outdoor activities. Bonus: You can catch the very early autumn colors if you travel up north to Hokkaido!
đď¸ November âââââ
(My Favorite!)
Temperature: 10°C â 17°C (50°F â 63°F)
Crowds: High
My Advice: From mid-to-late November, the autumn foliage (Koyo) makes the country in stunning reds and golds. Because it's so beautiful, popular spots get crowded. However, the temperatures are absolutely wonderful. You usually won't even need a heavy jacket during the sunny days, though it cools down quickly at night.
