Horseshoe Falls is the perfect spot for a picnic and a splash in the river, or makes for a lovely toddler walk - a short 1km pootle to the church and back down the river. It is also the start of the walk up velvelt hill (see seperate listing)
WALK INFO
LENGTH: 2km
The basic route is 1-2km, perfect for little ones finding their feet. However you can easily extend this down the canal towards Llangollen, or even across to Vale Circus Abbey and up Velvet hill.
DIFFICULTY: Easy
Well maintained footpaths and gradual slopes make this a nice easy walk
AGE SUITABILITY: All Ages
This route is great for all ages (however it is not pram friendly unless you start from llangollen and walk along the canal)
HIGHLIGHTS
👍 A grassy hillside by the river, with places to paddle and swim
👍 The start of the Llangollen canal, with option to extend the walk down the canal
👍 A church and graveyard to explore
👍 A family friendly river-side pub
NEED TO KNOW
PARKING: Horseshoe Falls Car Park Costs £3 for a full day.
This carpark is fairly small and can get busy – another option is to park closer to Llangollen and walk down the canal.
TOILETS: There are free toilets located at the car park
PRAM FRIENDLY?: Not really, unless you have an off-road pram or stick to the canal path
FOOD & DRINK: There is a pub a short walk from Horseshoe falls, but it only serves food at certain times – so be sure to check their opening times before you leave
SUMMARY
I love the options Horseshoe Falls offers us for a family day out;
❤ Set out your picnic blanket and settle down for a day by the river–the kids can run and roll down the hill, paddle in the water and scramble up and down the rock slabs
❤ Or maybe park here and wander down the canal to Llangollen for lunch then back down the canal for some river splashing and paddling.
❤ And even on moody rainy days you can appreciate the views and and fresh air, and then appreciate a lovely warm pub lunch at the Chainbridge hotel.
Whatever your family requirements, I think you can find a great family day out at horseshoe falls.
