Although you used to be able to visit this glacier on your own, you now are only able to visit Matanuska through a tour. During your about 3 hour tour, after securing your safety gear, you'll be lead along the glacier over different crevaces and to various glacier lakes. They'll even let you drink glacial water and try a glacier mud mask - so make sure to bring an empty waterbottle if you want to fill up. We've only ever booked through Glacier Tours on the Matanuska, which we've linked below.
