If you’re road-tripping around the Dolomites and want to slow things down for a day, Sirmione is one of those places that’s super easy to get to and totally worth it. It sits right on the southern tip of Lake Garda, and it’s got all the good stuff, castle views, cobbled streets, sunny piazzas, and gelato shops on every corner.
As soon as you cross the little bridge into the old town, you’re greeted by Scaliger Castle, it’s basically a fairytale fortress rising out of the water. You can climb up and get panoramic lake views, then wander the narrow streets, grab a spritz, or just people-watch by the harbour.
The water is ridiculously clear, and on warm days, people are swimming right off the edge of the town. No stress, no rush—just laid-back lakeside energy.
📝Things to do there:
Walk the old town – it’s cute, compact, and full of hidden corners
Check out the castle – because who doesn’t love a moat?
Visit the Grotte di Catullo – Roman ruins + lake views
Maybe check out the thermal spa
🚗How to get there:
If you’re staying in places like Val Gardena, Canazei, or Ortisei, Sirmione is about a 2.5 to 3-hour drive. It’s mostly scenic highways and rolling vineyards as you get closer to the lake. Totally doable as a day trip, leave in the morning, get your lake fix, and be back up in the mountains by evening .
Sirmione is one of those places that just feels good. It’s warm, relaxed, and packed with charm. If you're exploring around northern Italy and want to sneak in a lakeside chill day, this is it. It's a perfect change of pace from the mountain hikes and high-altitude vibes of the Dolomites.
