How to Get There

Diskit Monastery is located in Diskit village, the main hub of Nubra Valley, about 115 km from Leh via Khardung La Pass. The drive takes around 4–5 hours, depending on weather and traffic. The road is fully motorable, and Diskit is accessible year-round except during heavy snowfall. No special permits are needed beyond the standard Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Nubra Valley.

What to Expect

Diskit Gompa is the oldest and largest monastery in Nubra, founded in the 14th century. It belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect. The monastery is built on a hill overlooking the Shyok River and offers panoramic views of the valley. Highlights include the main prayer hall, housing a large statue of Maitreya Buddha, wall frescoes, and ancient Tibetan manuscripts. Right next to the monastery is the iconic 106-foot Maitreya Buddha statue, inaugurated in 2010. The atmosphere is peaceful, and the view from the statue platform is worth the short climb.
