Goat Island, Te Hāwere-a-Maki is a haven for marine life, New Zealand’s first marine reserve. Located just north of Auckland, it is a popular spot for snorkelling, diving and kayaking. The crystal clear waters are teeming with life - including colourful fish, stingrays, and other marine species.

Remember: Goat Island is a marine reserve. Follow the rules - no fishing, no fish feeding, no taking or disturbing any marine life, including shells, rocks and seaweed from the reserve.

Personal tip: Don’t forget about the rockpools - I have spotted an octopus in a tidepool here!! In winter, if it is too cold to swim, it’s worth visiting at low-tide to see what marine life you can see closer to the shore! The Matakana markets happen every Saturday - time your visit to Goat Island with a visit to the popular food, drink and produce markets between 8am and 1pm.

Pronunciation: Te Hāwere-a-Maki: tay - HAA-weh-reh - aa - mah-kee

Matakana: maa-taa-kaa-naa
