K'gari (Fraser Island) is sooo diverse!! It's island’s beaches, lush rainforests, and crystal-clear lakes are pretty much what dreams are made of!

If you’ve got a 4WD, you're in for a treat because it’s all about those sandy tracks – just be prepared, the ferry ride is around $200-$250 depending on the season, and that’s just for the ferry with your 4WD. If you’re going as a pedestrian, it’ll cost a lot less. But honestly, the ferry fee is totally worth it when you see the island’s beauty.

I’d recommend setting aside at least three days here, because there’s just so much to do! The first stop has to be Lake McKenzie – the water is so clear and beautiful, it’s like stepping into a postcard. Then, you can’t miss the Maheno Shipwreck, which is a hauntingly gorgeous spot that’s perfect for photos. And of course, make sure you take a wander through the rainforests to see the towering trees and ferns, you’ll feel like you’re in another world.

As for camping, there are a few awesome spots on the island. You’ve got Central Station for a true rainforest experience, or head to Dundubara for some epic beachside camping. Just make sure you book your campsites in advance, especially during peak season, because these spots get snapped up quick. You’ll need to bring your own camping gear and food as the island’s supplies are pretty limited.

If you're a backpacker heading to K'gari (Fraser Island), here are some budget-friendly accommodation options:

  1. Fraser Island YHA (Hervey Bay) – Close to the ferry terminal, comfy dorms, outdoor pool, and a chill vibe.

  2. Kingfisher Bay Resort (Camping) – Affordable camping option, close to the resort, and great for tours.

  3. Happy Wanderer Village (Hervey Bay) – Budget cabins and powered camping spots, laid-back atmosphere.

  4. Dundubara Campground (K'gari) – Beachfront camping directly on the island, basic but great for backpackers.

  5. Cathedrals on Fraser Eco Resort – Budget safari tents and cabins, eco-friendly vibe near stunning beaches.

Book early during peak seasons, especially if you’re visiting in summer!

A heads up – this is a no-pet zone, and make sure your 4WD is up for the challenge because the sand tracks can be pretty tricky (we got super bogged haha).
