💧 Goðafoss Waterfall
🗺️ How to Get There:
Located directly on Route 1, between Akureyri and Mývatn, Goðafoss is easily accessible from either direction. There are parking areas on both sides of the river, and a footbridge connects them. The east side offers a view into the horseshoe-shaped curve, while the west side gets you closer to the powerful drop and mist.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Open and accessible year-round. In summer, you’ll get lush green surroundings and high water volume. Winter transforms the falls into a snowy, icy scene, very photogenic but slippery, so spikes are recommended.
📸 Photography Tips:
Best time of day:
Sunrise or sunset for the most beautiful light, especially from the east side looking west. In winter, soft side light during the short day gives dramatic contrast between the water and snow.
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens for full waterfall views. ND filters for silky long exposures. Drone is permitted and offers excellent top-down and oblique views of the waterfall's curvature, fly carefully over the river.
Composition ideas:
From the east bank, frame the entire arc of the falls with river foreground
Capture close-up mist and ice formations in winter along the west bank
Drone top-down to show the symmetrical shape and turquoise glacial water
