If you’re after epic views without the huge crowds of Roys Peak, the Rocky Mountain Track is a gem. Located just 20 minutes from Wānaka, this hike takes you up past Diamond Lake and rewards you with sweeping views over Lake Wānaka, the Southern Alps, and Mt Aspiring in the distance.
The trail climbs steadily through native bush and tussock, with a couple of route options to the summit. It’s a great “bang-for-your-buck” hike — challenging enough to feel like an achievement, but short enough to fit into half a day.
Hike details:
Distance: 7 km return (depending on route)
Elevation gain: 489m
Time: 2.5–3.5 hours return
Grade: Moderate (steep in sections, but well marked)
Good to know:
There’s a car park at Diamond Lake Conservation Area, with a toilet at the start.
The track can be icy or muddy in winter and spring — wear sturdy shoes.
You can stop at Diamond Lake Lookout or the Lake Wānaka viewpoint if you don’t want to commit to the full summit.
On a clear day, the views from the top rival the more famous hikes in the area.
This one often flies under the radar, but it’s honestly one of the best hikes in the region — perfect if you want fewer people and just as much wow factor - I call it the 'easier Roys Peak' - views are very similar, for half the effort!
