Slieve Bearnagh is a prominent mountain located in the Mourne Mountains range in County Down, Northern Ireland. It stands at an impressive height of 739 meters (2,424 feet) and is renowned for its distinctive twin summits and rugged beauty. Slieve Bearnagh is a popular destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, offering breathtaking views and challenging terrain.

To reach Slieve Bearnagh starting from Trassey Car Park, you can follow the Trassey Track, which provides a direct and well-marked route. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Begin your journey at Trassey Car Park, which is situated near the town of Bryansford in the Mourne Mountains. From the car park, follow the Trassey Track, a well-defined path that starts by crossing the Trassey River via a wooden bridge. As you continue along the track, you'll gradually ascend through picturesque woodland, passing by cascading streams and lush vegetation. After approximately 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) of walking, you'll reach Hare's Gap, a distinct mountain pass that offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. At Hare's Gap, leave the Trassey Track and take the Mourne Wall, which is a stone wall that crosses the Mournes. Follow the Mourne Wall as it ascends towards the summit of Slieve Bearnagh. The path can be steep and rocky in places, requiring careful footing and some scrambling. As you climb higher, you'll be rewarded with increasingly awe-inspiring views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Eventually, you'll reach the col between Slieve Bearnagh's twin summits. From here, you can choose to ascend either the North Tor or the higher South Tor. The North Tor offers a more straightforward climb, while the South Tor involves some scrambling and requires a bit more skill and confidence. Once you've reached the summit, take some time to soak in the breathtaking vistas that span across the Mourne Mountains, the Irish Sea, and the surrounding countryside. When you're ready to descend, retrace your steps back to Hare's Gap and then follow the Trassey Track back to Trassey Car Park. It's important to note that hiking in the Mourne Mountains, including Slieve Bearnagh, requires proper preparation and caution. Make sure to check weather conditions, wear appropriate clothing and footwear, carry essential supplies such as food, water, and navigation tools, and inform someone about your plans before heading out. Additionally, always follow Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the natural environment and respect any specific guidelines or regulations in the area.
